1642—1651: The English Civil War Tensions between King Charles I and Parliament triggered a brutal civil war. The conflict resulted in the execution of the king in 1649 and a brief period without a monarchy, replaced by the republican Commonwealth under Oliver Cromwell.

1645—1645: RiCornish Royalist leader Sir Richard Grenville, 1st Baronet makes Launceston his base He stations Cornish troops along the River Tamar and issues them with instructions to keep "all foreign troops out of Cornwall". Grenville tries to use "Cornish particularist sentiment" to muster support for the Royalist cause and puts a plan to the Prince which would, if implemented, have created a semi-independent Cornwall.
