| 103 | Biography Cecile Callihoo was born in the Peace River area to the large family of Louis Callihoo, an Iroquoian voyageur and freeman, and his second wife, Marie Patenaude. [1] Marie was the Metis daughter of Michel Pattenaude and Francoise Crise. Cecile’s father spoke Mohawk and French, but had picked up Cree in his dealings with Cree people, and Cree was the primary language that his many children spoke. [2] Cecile grew up in a clan proficient in hunting, trapping, fishing, beading, tanning and making hides. Women also made clothing and moccasins, and helped to supply the fur trade posts where their families traded their goods. As the era of fur trading came to a close Cecile moved, with many from her family, to the Lac Ste. Anne area where their life could be supported, also, in farming. [2] Cecile’s children are documented through Metis scrip applications. Her marriage with Jean Baptiste Bellecourt is recorded as certified, in Edmonton, Northwest Territories (later Alberta), Canada, January 3rd, 1848. [3] Cecile was widowed and in 1866 married Edouard Breland. In 1877 she was widowed again [1]and lived the remainder of her life with her sons and daughters. Cecile applied for scrip, in St. Albert, in 1885, [1]and in 1900 for her deceased daughter, from Lac Ste. Anne. [4] In 1891 Cecile can be found on census as a lodger at St. Albert in the household of her son in law, James (Jacques) Laderoute. She is there with her daughter Emilienne (wife of James), and her eldest son, Joseph Bellcourt, caring for her grandson, Colin. Colin was the son of her recently deceased daughter Vitaline. Also listed are Emilienne's oldest two boys, still toddlers. [5] In 1901 Cecile is found staying with her son, Benjamin Bellcourt and two of his adult children in Lac Ste. Anne. She is using the surname of her first marriage, Bellcourt. [6] Cecile Belcourt nee Calliou died at Lac Ste Anne, on Nov 11th, 1911. Upon her death her age is estimated as 70. [7] Notably, the majority of Cecile’s siblings went on to have large families of their own. Cecile’s brother Michel Callihoo (Calistrois), as Chief, signed an adhesion to Treaty 6 in 1878 and settled the band near St Albert. His son Felix Calihoo, was a founder of the Métis Association of Alberta, and another son John Callihoo, a founder of the Indian Association of Alberta.
